The Stories of Refugees

Join us for an evening to meet some courageous refugees from Congo, Guatemala, Uganda, Somalia, and Afghanistan, who have overcome unthinkable situations around the world. Some have recently fled their homes, while others have been displaced for years.

7:00 pm - 8:00 pm: Young Refugees from Congo, Guatemala, and Uganda will read their Safed House award winning essays telling their personal stories. We will also hear from two very active members of the community, who both aim to support and empower refugees as they transition to life in the US.

8:00 pm - 9:00 pm: Author and former refugee, Asmeen Hamkar will be speaking about her journey and book “Refugee from Afghanistan: No one wants to leave her home…..or loved ones….. UNLESS SHE MUST."

Living in your homeland is the most valuable blessing a human being can have. No one should have this blessing taken from them. Asmeen shares her deep love for her home and county. As a young woman, she is forced to leave to be safe and to stay alive. Walk with Asmeen as she shares her harrowing escape. The journey is filled with difficulties, loss, happiness, and finally hope as she searches for safety… and a new place to call home.

Asmeen’s book will be for sale at the event. An autograph session will follow her talk.
The Welcome To America Project and Safed House will have booths with information about the work they do with local refugees. Lutheran Social Services Women's Empowerment Program will have various handmade items for sale
