The Rwandan Community Abroad in Florida in collaboration with The University of North Florida, will be commemorating the 1994 Genocide Against Tutsi in Rwanda. The Commemoration event is open to the public and will bring together Rwandans and Friends of Rwanda, elected officials, organizations and other supporters living in various parts of Florida such as Jacksonville, St Augustine, Orlando, Tampa, Miami, Daytona, Tallahassee and many other cities in Florida and outside Florida.
Over one hundred of history’s darkest days, more than one million Rwandans perished in the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. 2022 marks the 28th commemoration, an important occasion to remember the lives that were lost, show solidarity with survivors and unite to ensure it never happens again in Rwanda or anywhere. It is also a chance to learn about Rwanda’s story of reconciliation and nation building and Rwanda’s achievements in ensuring the preservation of the important the history of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi.
Kwibuka, which means “remember” in Kinyarwanda, is a global framework for activities, events, communities and people participating in the commemoration. Kwibuka28 an important time to remember what happened, unite to ensure it never happens again, and continue to be part of Rwanda’s ongoing journey of renewal. Additionally, Kwibuka28 calls on the global community to stand together against genocide ideology & denial.
