PHOENIX -  We Are All America - Arizona Coalition, a local group of former refugees and advocates, invites Arizona state legislators, along with interested community members, to join us for Refugee Education Day at the Arizona State Capitol on Mar. 31. With the current humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, it is crucial for Arizona state legislators to listen to former refugees about what it is like to seek refuge in Arizona and how collaboratively Arizonans can work together to continue welcoming refugees.

“This is a time to welcome people. We can never fully anticipate the humanitarian needs of the world. We need to advocate for refugees now so that in the future, we have a greater capacity to help people in crisis.” said Connie Phillips, MSW, President & CEO of Lutheran Social Services of the Southwest.

“We are facing a global humanitarian crisis with millions of individuals displaced. Now is the time to welcome those fleeing persecution and seeking refuge into our communities. We have a moral obligation to do what is right and help those in need.” said Nejra Sumic, oversees the We Are All America - Arizona Coalition.

Arizona has repeatedly played a major role in resettling refugees. Following the departure of American troops in Afghanistan last year, Gov. Doug Ducey and House Speaker Russell Bowers promised to take in Afghan allies and families who aided the United States during the 20-year war. As we witness another humanitarian crisis emerge in Ukraine, it is important that our elected officials receive the sufficient support they need to know how to best welcome people seeking safety.
