Who Opposes Ronald Mortensen's Nomination?

Elected Officials of Both Parties

Senator Jeff Flake (R-AZ): Sen. Jeff Flake opposes the nomination of Ronald Mortensen because of his past rhetoric against immigrants, becoming the first Republican senator to publicly balk at President Donald Trump's pick.

Senator John McCain (R-AZ) and Senator Christopher Coons (D-DE): "We encourage the administration to withdraw Mr. Mortensen's nomination to serve as Assistant Secretary of State for Population, Refugees, and Migration and to work with President Trump to nominate a qualified individual who is committed to the United States' legacy of promoting the human rights of displaced people."

Utah Governor Gary Herbert (R): Herbert’s office told the White House after Trump nominated Mortensen that the governor objected to the choice.

Mortensen's Former Employer

Mortensen's former employer, Paul Mero, urges Senators not to confirm his nomination. "Utah’s senators should oppose Mortensen’s confirmation because he does not represent the face of Utah on issues of refugees and immigration."

Businesses and Organizations

American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU): "Mortensen’s record directly undermines the bureau’s core mission. Senators should be alarmed by Mortensen’s fiercely xenophobic rhetoric and long history of undermining the rights of refugees and immigrants."

Anti-Defamation League (ADL): "The potential harm Mr. Mortensen would impose on U.S. refugee policy and this country’s handling of the most vulnerable populations around the world, including refugees and asylum seekers raises serious concerns ... the Jewish community knows all too well what happens when people fleeing for their lives feel like they have nowhere to turn."

FWD.us: "Especially given the news of the last few days and the separation of tiny babies from their parents, it is beyond troubling that people like Ronald Mortensen who have spent their careers spreading falsehoods on immigrants ... keep being appointed to these critical government jobs."

Human Rights First: "At a time when the world is facing the worst displacement crisis since World World II, it is astounding President Trump would nominate an individual with a hostile attitude toward immigrants. Mortensen’s nomination is like choosing the fox to guard the hen house."

Refugees International: "The nominee's writings demonstrate an absence of empathy and compassion essential for a position of leadership on refugee issues."

Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce: "We call upon the Trump administration to withdraw its nomination of Ronald Mortensen and upon Utah’s congressional delegation to actively oppose it." The Chamber also urged the president and congressional delegation "to work together to find a candidate who reflects core Utah values."

Salt Lake Tribune: Editorial Board calls on Utah Senators Orin Hatch and Mike Lee to oppose Mortensen's nomination.
