World Refugee Day Celebration
Join us for arts, food, music, crafts, dance, stories, kids activities and other special presentations! This event is FREE and open to the public, and is in collaboration with Refugee Artisans of Worcester (RAW), Refugee & Immigrant Assistance Center, The Southeast Asian Coalition, African Community Education, and the Worcester Arts Council.
World Refugee Day marks the Anniversary of the 1951 Convention on the Status of Refugees by the United Nations General Assembly and is celebrated worldwide. This celebration is to honor the strength, courage, and determination of refugees around the world and to recognize the important contributions refugees make to the social, cultural, and economic vibrancy of the City of Worcester.
The Mayor will proclaim June 15 as World Refugee Day in the City of Worcester. The proclamation will be presented to Ascentria Care Alliance, on behalf of Worcester's refugees and the network of organizations that assist them. Last year 300 refugees were resettled in Worcester from Iraq, Syria, Bhutan, Somalia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Central African Republic, and other African and Asian nations. Worcester's resettlement agencies and their partners focus on helping refugees attain self-sufficiency with an array of services, including ESOL classes, job training and placement.
